Student-at-Law — Criminal Defence

Pham Law Group | Regina, Saskatchewan

Learn criminal defence by doing the work.

Pham Law Group is seeking a Student-at-Law to join our Regina office. This position is focused entirely on criminal defence.  We handle all Criminal Code and CDSA charges.

Our clients face consequences that can change their lives. They deserve careful preparation, honest advice and a defence team that takes their case seriously. We do not play games with their cases, and we expect the same commitment from everyone who works here.

We are looking for someone who wants to become a capable criminal defence lawyer—not simply complete their articles.

The Work

You will work directly with our lawyers on criminal matters, from initial disclosure through resolution and trial preparation. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing disclosure, identifying evidentiary issues and organizing case materials.
  • Researching criminal law, Charter issues and sentencing authorities.
  • Drafting correspondence, legal submissions, applications and supporting materials.
  • Meeting with clients and assisting with preparation for bail hearings, preliminary inquiries and trials.
  • Attending court and taking on appropriate appearances and file responsibilities under supervision.

You will be expected to understand the files you work on, think critically about the evidence and contribute to the defence strategy. As your skills develop, so will your responsibilities.

Who We Are Looking For

You should have a genuine interest in criminal defence, strong research and writing skills, and the judgment to recognize when you need guidance.

Organization matters. So do accuracy, preparation and follow-through. You must be able to manage deadlines, follow instructions, accept direct feedback and complete work without repeated reminders.

You must also be comfortable working with people facing difficult circumstances. We expect professionalism, discretion and respect toward clients, colleagues, court staff and everyone involved in a case.

Prior criminal law experience is an asset, but it is not essential. A serious work ethic and willingness to learn are essential.

We value strong writers.  We pride ourselves on the quality of our writing, so we are seeking exceptional, high-caliber writers who can articulate complex ideas with absolute clarity and surgical precision.

Location and Travel

This is an in-person position based in our Regina office. Applicants must be eligible to article in Saskatchewan.

A valid driver’s licence and reliable access to a vehicle are required. The position may involve travel to courts outside Regina.

What You Can Expect

Direct involvement in criminal defence files, practical instruction and candid feedback on your work. You will learn how to assess evidence, identify legal issues, prepare a case and explain difficult decisions to clients.

We take preparation seriously. We expect you to do the same.
